Stick with Spiderman. You don't seem to understand Naruto at all.
(Naruto sells because it's a great story about FRIENDSHIP)

Respectfully,

Ishmael

I knew the "Dragon Ball Z" volume I read was in the middle of things, which probably meant that I was missing something important. That's why I didn't review that one. My mention of it in the "Naruto" post is still true, though -- I didn't enjoy reading it. I can't critique the entire series, but I can report on what I thought about the part I read.

The most successful serialized stories give the reader a complete reading experience with each volume. So even though a longtime reader may find it more enriching, a new reader will still "get it."

Just as a hypothetical, I doubt any reader would tolerate a six-issue "X-Men" story if all it was was a long fight between Cyclops and Magneto for the whole 190 pages or so. No one would say that the reader should go back and start with "X-Men #1" in the 1960s in order to experience that fight scene the right way. There would have to be some character development, some slower scenes, some talking, some lead-up time, a climax, and some falling action.

It's interesting to read things from a non-manga fan point-of-view, still I would like to point out that - while I don't like Dragonball either - you need to start with the original Dragonball series to see what made young boys buy into it so much.
Dragonballl Z (in the USA as titled by VIZ, Germany has them all as Dragonball and there's only Dragonball Z the anime) is the second part of the series of 42 volumes (according to wikpedia) and by then only people who already know the set-up and are addicted to it read it regularly.
